Travelling with your baby can be both exciting and challenging. Parents often worry about how they will manage their little one’s needs while on the go.

I remember our first walk down to the local park with our newborn. Looking back now I can smile but at the time it felt like a logistical nightmare!

While first-time parents may find it especially overwhelming to pack and organise all necessary items within limited luggage space once youve done it once you’ll soon get the hang of it and you’ll build a system that works for you!

Choosing the right nappies

When travelling with a baby, having the right nappies on hand is key for comfort and convenience. You can find the best deals on your favourite nappies brands here

Nappy Changing

Quick Change Techniques

To make nappy changing quicker and smoother, use these techniques:

  • Prepare in advance: Gather all your essentials, like nappies, wipes, and bags, before you start changing your baby. This will save time and reduce stress.
  • Use a changing pad: A portable changing pad makes it easier and more comfortable to change your baby anywhere, anytime.
  • Zips: Maybe its just me but baby onsies with clips just drive me nuts. Having to clip in an active baby, not fun. I always prefer onsies with a full length zip.

Minimising Messes

No one wants a messy nappy change. To minimise the chances of messes:

  • Fresh Nappy Prepared: This is a trick I picked up watching the nurses at Newborn Care with our wee one. Place the fresh nappy open under your baby before you start taking the old nappy off. Its ready to be put on after cleaning your baby
  • Roll-in technique: After cleaning your baby, roll the dirty nappy inwards so the mess stays inside before disposing of it.
  • Use a wet wipe barrier: Place a wet wipe on your baby’s bottom during nappy changes to prevent them from making contact with the changing surface.
  • Clean from front to back: Always wipe from front to back to avoid spreading germs and causing infections.

Nappy Change Essentials

When travelling with a baby these are the essentials that you should always have with you.

Baby Wipes

Baby wipes are indispensable when travelling with a baby. They are not only useful for cleaning your baby’s bottom but also for wiping down any surfaces or your hands that might get dirty during the process. I always go for a high-quality, unscented wipe that are gentle on your baby’s skin. Look for those which are hypoallergenic and alcohol-free. My personal preference right now is the Thankyou thick and soft baby wipes. They work fine and Ive never had one rip.

Nappy Rash Creams

Nappy rash cream helps prevent and treat any skin irritation whether its nappy rash or sunburn. When selecting a cream I really only consider those with natural ingredients. Make sure to apply a thin layer of cream during each nappy change, particularly if your baby is prone to rashes. My personal choice is Covitol.

Portable Changing Mats

Do carry a portable changing mat with you for on-the-go nappy changes. These mats help provide a clean and comfortable surface for your baby to lie on during a change. My portal change mat rolls up to wrap nappies and wipes in a selfcontained unit.

Disposable Nappy Bags

Having some kind of nappy bags on hand is useful. They are necessary for disposing of soiled nappies in a hygienic and discreet manner. Nappy bags come in various sizes and designs, with some being biodegradable and eco-friendly.

Hand Sanitiser

For cleaning your hands when a sink isnt available. We always try to have a hand sanitiser in the car and in the pram.

Organising Your Travel Bag

Remembering to have well-stocked and organised nappy bag takes the stress out of travelling. Only pack what is essential, but make sure to keep a few extras for emergencies.

  • Nappies: 1 per few hours of travel, plus a few extras
  • Baby wipes: A travel-sized pack
  • Nappy cream: A small tube
  • Changing pad: Foldable or travel-sized version

Dividing by Function

Organise your nappy bag by grouping items based on their purpose. Depending on how structured you are you can use small zippered pouches or compartments within the nappy bag to further organise these groups:

  • Changing: Nappies, wipes, nappy cream, and changing pad
  • Feeding: Bottles, formula, snacks, and bibs
  • Clothing: Spare clothes, socks, and accessories
  • Entertainment: Small toys, books, or comfort items

Useful Extras

While streamlining and dividing your items, consider adding these useful extras to your nappy bag:

  • Nappy sacks: To dispose of dirty nappies while on the go
  • Hand sanitiser: For cleaning your hands when a sink is unavailable
  • Tissues: For cleaning little noses or spills
  • Reusable shopping bag: To hold dirty clothes or nappies that you’re unable to discard immediately

Tips for International Travel

Travelling with a baby can be challenging, especially when going abroad. Here are some tips for making the experience smoother.

Airplane Nappy Changes

Most airplanes have changing tables in their lavatories, but they can be cramped and uncomfortable. Here are some tips to make the process easier:

  • Bring a compact, foldable changing mat for a clean and comfortable surface.
  • Pack a small bag with nappies, wipes, and a change of clothes for easy access during the flight.
  • Choose aisle seats near the lavatories for convenient nappy changes.
