blog \ Diaper Bag Essentials: What You Need to Pack for Your Baby in Australia
Having a plan of action and all your baby’s supplies at hand will take the stress out of activities where youre away from home
Ill run you thru how we pack our diaper bag in our household. Not to say it suits everyone but it works great for us.
We prefer a daybag for our diaper bag. A ~30 litre macpac that we can fill with everything and anything we need for an outing. We typically do half day to day outings with our little one - with a bit of walking/short hikes and having the one bag seems to work well. Depending on what we’re doing its the main bag for outing/doubling as the nappy bag.
Diapers
Yes, diapers are the no-brainer item for your diaper bag. And do make sure theyre actually in the bag before you go out. Ive been caught out a few times when Ive assumed nappies are wellstocked but discovered we were running low. Stressful! Depending on what we’re planning to do we pack 2 or 3 nappies. Generally take enough nappies to last for the duration of the outing, plus a few extras.

Wet Wipes
Wet wipes are another essential. They can be used for cleaning up messes and spills, wiping down surfaces, and of course, cleaning baby’s bottom during diaper changes. I’ve mentioned elsewhere always go for a high-quality, unscented wipe that are gentle on your baby’s skin. Look for those which are hypoallergenic and alcohol-free. My personal preference right now is the Thankyou thick and soft baby wipes. They work fine and Ive never had one rip.
Changing Pad
A changing pad is super useful. We have a neoprene one that folds like a purse and doubles as a wrap for a few nappies or as a sitting pad or a pillow.
Hand Sanitiser
We just always have hand sanitiser. I think we just got into the habit during Covid and have kept it going. Obviously It’s important to keep hands clean before and after diaper changes, especially when changing baby in public places. Maybe I’m overzealous but we have a bottle in the bag, and one in the car too for using after being in restrooms or filling up at the petrol station
Spare Clothes
Accidents can happen, so it’s a good idea to pack a spare set of clothes for baby in the diaper bag. I go for at least a onesie but a spare jersey can be handy too depending on the weather. Its more like insurance. Its just one of those things that you dont expect - we were playing with a drinking fountain and got absolutely soaked one time (my fault) and having that spare onesie was super handy!
Depending on age of your wee one and the activity you may want to consider:
Toys
A favourite toy or two can be a lifesaver depending what youre doing. Right now we are really into racecars so have the current favourite on hand if theres a long car ride.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is an essential
Sunhat
We have a nice widebrimmed sunhat for our toddler
Waterbottle
We never travel anywhere without our toddlers waterbottle
Diaper Rash Cream
My personal choice for diaper rash cream is Covitol. When selecting a cream I really only consider those with natural ingredients. When you need it you need it - and it can elps prevent and treat any skin irritation whether its nappy rash or sunburn from what I understand. Probably something Id only take for a longer trip
To sum it up once youve set yourself up and used it a few times yyou’ll quickkly build a system that works for you!
