blog \ How do swim nappies work?
When our little one turned one we signed him up for Water Babes at our local pool - a learn to swim program designed to develop water confidence. To enter the program our little tadpole (not toilet trained at the time) needed to wear elasticised swimwear over nappies to prevent accidents in the water
We went down the path of getting a pair of splashabout neoprene elasticised swimmers (reusable swim nappies) as that’s what was available at the pool we swim at.
Splashabout are the only brand we’ve used so far, I’m not saying they’re the best one to get but can happily say theyve worked just fine for us so far.
I think whichever brand you go for the key is that you just need to be sure of the right fit as if the swimmers arent snug then they wont do their job.

Swim Nappies
Swim nappies are specially designed to contain solid waste while allowing water to flow through. They are made from waterproof materials that do not absorb water, such as neoprene or polyester, and have elastic leg and waist openings to provide a secure fit.
Unlike regular nappies, swim nappies do not have absorbent padding. Instead, they rely on their snug fit and the use of a disposable or reusable liner to catch any solid waste.
Swim nappies come in two types: disposable and reusable. Disposable swim nappies are designed for one-time use and are made from lightweight materials that do not add bulk to the nappy. Reusable swim nappies, on the other hand, are made from durable materials and can be washed and reused multiple times.
Swim nappies are not a substitute for regular nappies. They are designed to contain solid waste only and do not provide any absorbency for urine.
Overall, swim nappies are an essential item for any parent taking their child swimming. They provide a hygienic solution for containing solid waste while allowing children to enjoy the water.
Reusable Swim Nappies
Waterproof Material
The outer layer of a reusable swim nappy will be made from a waterproof material, Ive seen neoprene and polyester ones. This layer helps prevent any accidents from leaking into the pool or beach water, maintaining a sanitary environment.
Adjustable Waist and Leg Elastic
Reusable swim nappies should feature snug waistbands and leg elastics. A snug fit is key. Some come with a snap fastening system that allows you to customise the fit according to your child’s size
Washing and Care
After swimming, it is important to rinse the nappy thoroughly as soon as possible. This helps to remove any chlorine, which can damage the elastics quickly. If there is no faecal matter, a thorough rinse or a machine wash is sufficient, and then line dry the nappy. In case of faecal matter, flush away what you can before washing the nappy.
