blog \ What causes Nappy Rash
Nappy rash is a common skin condition that affects babies and young children. It is characterised by red, inflamed skin in the nappy area, including the buttocks, genitals, and inner thighs. The rash may be accompanied by small bumps, blisters or sores, and may be itchy or painful for the child.
In the past, my little one has had nappy rash from some nappies brands. Once we changed brands his skin settled down.
Nappy rash can be caused by a number of factors, including:
- Prolonged exposure to wetness or moisture
- Friction from nappies or clothing
- Irritation from urine or faeces
- Bacterial or fungal infections
- Allergic reactions to nappies, wipes, or other products
Preventing nappy rash is key, and can be achieved by following some simple steps:
- Changing nappies frequently, ideally every two to three hours
- Cleaning the nappy area thoroughly at each nappy change
- Allowing the skin to dry completely before putting on a new nappy
- Using a barrier cream to protect the skin from moisture and irritants
If nappy rash does develop, there are several treatment options available, including:
- Using a nappy rash cream to soothe and protect the skin
- Changing to a different type of nappy or wipes
- Using a prescription-strength cream or ointment if the rash is severe or persistent
It is important to seek medical advice if the rash does not improve after a few days, or if it appears to be spreading or becoming more severe. With proper care and attention, most cases of nappy rash can be prevented or effectively treated.
